Our ethos

Barefoot Boy was born after watching my boy growing up and seeing that he was at his very happiest when he was Barefoot on the beach!  Having been based in the South East we found we were taking every opportunity to spend time by the sea…weekend trips to West Wittering and endless road trips to Salcombe for our beach fixes! These trips became more and more regular and these places became his happy place! As a little boy he played in rock pools, built sandcastles, loved nothing more than to be buried in the sand and never wore shoes! As he grew up he learned to surf and skim board, he sailed Oppies and then Toppers. He spent endless hours quay jumping, playing in the estuaries and having BBQ’s on the beach with his friends.  I started to notice how hard he found returning to the South East. The pressure increased, the anxiety rose and all the things that improved his wellbeing had been left behind… and with all that in mind, in 2019 we made the move and relocated to Salcombe… our absolute happy place! Now as a teenager my Barefoot Boy is spending his teenage years, surfing and exploring the estuary in his RIB…the beach and the ocean has given him the most amazing opportunities, he is still my Barefoot Boy and still at his happiest when he can see the ocean and feel the sand on his feet…his beach and ocean journey isn’t over… he has aspirations to crew on the Salcombe Lifeboat and to be a Marine Engineer.... I watch and smile as his ocean story continues to unfold but most of all I am grateful for the sense of wellbeing he gets from being by the sea!

It was whilst sitting contemplating his story on a sunny afternoon at Smalls, that the Barefoot Boy brand was born and it was always about more than just selling hoodies and tees.  It was about supporting children’s wellbeing and mental health, encouraging families to get back to basics, limiting technology and social media and reminding us all that our children face a huge amount of pressure growing up these days, their wellbeing is far more important than their grades. We need to teach them to live in the moment; we need to create simple but amazing moments, we need to show them sunrises and sunsets…their experiences will create their future!
